With our opening hymn, From Heaven you came, Rev. Paul Clapham focused our thoughts on
Jesus. Songs of praise followed before Paul showed how Mark’s gospel portrays the development
of the disciples’ relationship with Jesus. In chapter 6, read by Neil, Jesus shows his compassion
with healings and miracles – feeding 5000 with 5 loaves and 2 fish. People were getting to know
him as a caring and charismatic man.
After prayers for compassion in our leaders, for the victims of world conflict, for churches and
friends Neil read of Jesus walking on water, terrifying his disciples yet thereby showing his creative
power as God in human form. Friendship turned to awe. We sang I cannot tell why he whom
angels worship.
Finally Jill read from chapter 16, the discovery of the empty tomb after Jesus’ crucifixion. We
become more aware of who God is in the person of Jesus, a concept that is difficult to comprehend
and share. We sang Crown him with many crowns and Paul gave us his blessing.
