On the second Sunday in Advent we considered preparation for Jesus’ coming and God setting up his Kingdom. We lit a candle for peace in situations where it is sorely needed.
Rev. Roger Baker led prayers of thanks for hope in peace when that kingdom is established. He discussed preparations for Christmas with the children. John the Baptist called people to turn away from rubbish and sin. Jesus is the best gift of all.
Rod Smith read to us from Isaiah 11 – the root of Jesse will establish peace and concord, and Matthew 3 – John the Baptist calls for repentance and preparation for the Lord; all sin will be destroyed.
With powerful words John called for urgent repentance challenging those for whom faith became mere ritual and guilt waned. So much today teaches anything is OK. Repentance involves more than feeling sorry. Building a genuine relationship with God is ongoing through examination and renewal through the Holy Spirit.
As his fame grew John remained humble pointing people to God as an obedient, self effacing servant. We can draw others to Christ through kindness demonstrating Jesus’ all inclusive love. He courageously spoke against hypocrisy and corruption. We must protest in bad situations, encourage those whose faith falters.
After prayers for grace, self discipline and courage, peace in our world, for the sick and for our circuit Roger served Holy Communion.
