“Come … just as you are to worship” was Rev. Roger Baker’s call to worship last Sunday. Margaret Maxwell read from Luke 14, the cost of being a disciple and Roger led prayers for our neighbours and for light and peace in a dark world.

Roger’s theme was being available. In the passage from Luke Jesus asks if he can count on his disciples. Are we ready to walk in his steps? He doesn’t ask for anything he has not undertaken himself. We must put him before anything else. Are we available to meet the challenges and cost of service as he did, facing rejection, misunderstanding and mockery? He will equip us to care for the needy and sacrifice dignity. New beginnings are available to us now, working alongside our new minister and his wife, not leaving everything to them. Roger prayed for grace and help to be available to us. All was emphasised in our next hymn “I, the Lord of sea and sky… Whom shall I send? Is it I, Lord?” Roger then served Holy Communion assisted by Rosalind.
