Last Sunday, following on from his service at Pentecost, Rev. Roger Baker led the first of three services on the Holy Spirit. Before he began we were asked to think about the nature of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Keith Harrison read the first part of Psalm 139 and Jill Harrison an extract from John 16. Neil and Jill Barnett accompanied our hymns and we recited the Nicene Creed together.
The Holy Spirit is a concept often misconstrued yet a vital part of a Christian’s everyday life. He gives a new dimension to our perceptions. He is a unique person, much more than an influence. We can grieve, resist and have a relationship with him. He is the third person in the Trinity, sent by the Father and Son and united with them. He was involved in the Creation and is the agent of new life. He is the inspiration of the authors of Scripture. The Bible is the expression of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Roger followed the Methodist Service Book for Pentecost with prayers and then Holy Communion assisted by Jill. Our final hymn was “Holy Spirit, come, confirm us” followed by a blessing. Roger then gave us each a list of Bible references illustrating his address to study at home.
