Easter is a special time for the churches in Ashley, who united on Good Friday with joint services, including a walk of witness.
Ashley Methodist Church’s Easter Sunday Service began with everyone placing a daffodil on the empty cross – a joyful display to give thanks for Christ’s resurrection.  Guy Chatburn read a special Easter reflection written through the eyes of someone who witnessed the crucifixion.  The present day writer woke from this dream, realising that he too would have joined the baying crowd, through fear and self-preservation.  But Christ himself forgave them all, saying “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing”.
Rosalind Chatburn introduced our preacher Mr Michael Shingler. After we sang wonderful Easter hymns and said prayers, Rod Smith read from Luke’s gospel about the resurrection. Michael described the agonising death on the cross but after the joyful realisation of the resurrection, Mary Magdalene was the first evangelist, exclaiming the good news.
Richard Lucas read from John’s gospel when the risen Christ appeared in the upper room. The disciples were hiding behind a locked door. Christ, now the living God, breathed on them and said “ receive the Holy Spirit”.
Michael reflected on what this meant today. Like Christ, Christians can be alive in a new different life. Our bodies may be frail but Christ is immortal and will lift us up to God. Our earthly lives can be changed and redirected by the Holy Spirit, to help others find faith.
