On Mothering Sunday our worship began as Sue Fox placed a bowl and towel below our Lenten
cross to remember Christ washing his disciples’ feet. Rev. Rob Cotton told a funny story to the
children before they moved to the hall to make daffodil posies. Guy and Ros Chatburn read to us
from Ephesians 5, children of light, and John 9, Jesus heals a blind man and talks of spiritual
blindness.
Rob quoted Jeremiah 5 v21: people have eyes but cannot see. They are unaware of God’s glory all
around them. When his disciples queried the cause of the blind man’s affliction Jesus brushed this
aside. He was more concerned to help the blind man. He seized the moment to cure his physical
and spiritual blindness. He knows all our needs and wants the best for us. He offers cleansing
through his forgiveness. Rob quoted St Augustine: Faith is to believe what we cannot see; the
reward is to see what we believe. We worship together supporting each other as a family, seeking
the vision of God.
Rob offered prayers for peace, for spiritual guidance for world leaders, for the suffering and unwell.
The children rejoined us for Holy Communion after which they handed out their posies as we sang
To God be the glory. Rob concluded with further prayers and a blessing.
