Rev. Roger Baker, our preacher last Sunday, began with a quotation describing Jesus as the image
of the invisible Creator. After prayers of praise, confession and thanks Roger continued his study of
Paul’s letter to the Philippians. The opening verses of chapter 2 describe Jesus’ humility and
greatness, an example for us to imitate as a church and as individuals. Paul appeals for church unity
shining with the mind of Christ. Unity flows from shared grace by redemption through Christ and
gives strength to our witness. Believers are held together by a common purpose. Harmony is
achieved through humility, self effacement, obedience, mutual support and restraint from
complaining. We are called to be different within a depraved generation. We need to ask God’s
help in reshaping our habits where necessary. Paul visualises the church as a beacon of light
enabled by God.
Roger led meditative prayers interspersed with verses from the Charles Wesley hymn: Jesus, Lord,
we look to Thee. Prayers of intercession were followed by our closing hymn, Hear the call of the
Kingdom, and Roger concluded with a prayer for wisdom, patience and courage to shine.
