Last Sunday we were delighted to welcome Rev. Roger Baker. He led us in prayers of contrition and fervent thanks for God’s continuing forgiveness. He prayed for lasting peace in our troubled world and for those going through difficult times. Roger then spoke to the children about what they like doing, reminding them that God gives us joy because he loves us.

Jill Harrison read from John 14 where Jesus prepares his disciples for his imminent execution, resurrection and ascension into Heaven. Jesus was helping them to understand the significance of these events, causing upheaval and a change of direction, stresses somewhat similar to moving house today. Jesus wants to reside within us. Like the disciples we must prepare for him by clearing out all the distractions that get in the way. Throughout our lives we need to guard against stuff that shifts our focus. We should welcome Jesus as a permanent dweller within us, not a temporary guest, and honour him by keeping his commandments, expressing his love and grace in our way of living. Next week is Pentecost, the gift of the Holy Spirit offering new life with an inner presence.

Keith Harrison read from Acts 1, Jesus is taken up into Heaven. We recited the Nicene Creed and Roger served Holy Communion assisted by Jill. Together we asked to be made ready for the coming Spirit.
