Last Sunday we rejoiced to witness the baptism and confirmation of our dear friend Ann McCullagh. After our introductory hymn, Lord God your love has called us here, Rev Helen Kirk led prayers offering our penitence and service, giving thanks for the grace, forgiveness and hope we receive. Rod Smith read Psalm 30 for us, a song of thanks where peace bubbles up through a life of struggle. Sue Fox read from John’s Gospel 21 where Jesus appears to the disciples out fishing and Peter declares his love for him.
Like the disciples we can turn to routine when things are difficult, take time to step back and see the bigger picture, to listen and then act. We need Jesus’ guidance; we cannot do it alone. Everyone has gifts to offer. We must be prepared to meet and recognise Jesus unexpectedly often in ordinary life. All are invited and can offer hospitality and grace. Discipleship is in the everyday giving of love, care and openness to others, working together as the body of Christ.
After Ann had made her vows and the congregation promised her support we sang Love divine, all loves excelling and Helen prayed for the worldwide church, for sharing God’s love and for the needs of those known to us. We sang our final hymn, Let love be real, and shared the Grace.
