On the fourth Sunday in Lent we placed a bowl and towel on our Cross symbolizing Jesus washing his disciples’ feet. June Aldcroft called us to meet as a family learning and feeding on Jesus. She talked to the children about the origins of this day here and in USA and gave them each a card to colour as a gift.
Richard Lucas read to us from 1 Corinthians 13, the well known passage on love, and 1 John, the command to love one another. Sue Fox read some verses on refreshment and renewal of the Spirit.
June spoke of the modern Mother’s Day – celebrating a divine creation or a commercial manipulation? Today is also Refreshment Sunday and we are spiritual beings.. Motherhood is not easy. Mothers in the Bible often suffered and made many sacrifices. The love which Jesus commands is not just emotion. It is an act of will for which we need to draw on Jesus’ strength. Today we celebrate achievement when empowered by the Holy Spirit.
In prayer June petitioned for all who are hurting because of disaster, war or personal difficulties. Charles Wesley’s hymn, Love divine all loves excelling, was followed by a blessing and the children handed out the posies they had made
